There was an interesting incident yesterday -- our 'friend' from the Ministry, Wayne Hill, came by yesterday and seized the opportunity not only to shake us down but to have a chat with Ellie. She was in the shop by herself, stocking shelves, when Mr Hill came in. I was coming back down and realised, and just stayed put to listen for a minute or two.
He said, 'you must be their new mudblood,' and she said, 'yes sir.' He said he'd heard a rumour I'd gone on some sort of trip and wanted to know what she knew about being gone. She said she would never be so impertinent as to ask Master and Mistress nosy questions. (During the Full Moon, Sirius, Bea, and I spent the night at 12 Grimmauld, so as to ensure Ellie didn't encounter either me in wolf form, or Sirius in dog form. We said I'd gone on a trip to order inventory, so Ellie could have told him that, but she played dumb.)
He wanted her opinion of us, and she said that we expect her to work hard and that's to be expected as that's all mudbloods are good for. He wanted to know about our inventory and she kept right on with the 'too stupid to answer questions usefully' act.
Finally I thought I really ought to step in, and he took his money and took himself off. Once he was gone, Ellie gave me a pretty full accounting of the ways in which he'd tried to nose into our business, garnished with quite a bit of 'I would never betray you, Master, you and the Mistress are better masters than I'd ever dreamed of.' I tried to show approval for her willingness to keep our secrets without showing how uncomfortable -- well.
At any rate, I told her she'd done well and invited her to choose a treat from the selection in the shop. We have sweets of various kinds, tea, dried fruit, spices that wouldn't be very tasty on their own but also some biscuits, that sort of thing. She chose a scone...and gave half of it to Padfoot.

I hope you'll tell her that Sinbad sometimes goes off on his own but always comes back? I don't want her disconsolate when I head up to Hogwarts tomorrow.

This is getting tiresome, though. I wish we could skip ahead to the part where we tell her the truth.
I don't suppose we're ready to at least have her start minding Bea now and then? Maybe in the afternoons?
She'd probably interpret it as further reward for her loyalty.

To mind Bea now and then -- mm, probably. I think she's responsible and reliable. Especially as you can keep an eye on her.

But then, I've recently been told I don't give my trust very easily.
Private message to Padfoot
Re: Private message to Padfoot
I swear I recognise that owl. Smart little thing, too. Knew better than to drop the letter when Ellie was about.
Anyway. It's good to know I'm a source of frustration with teenagers throughout Hogwarts. But the point is that the young lady has a mother she'd like to help get out of the Protectorate.
I rather wish she'd sent this sooner. We might be able to get her mother out on the solstice but it'll be tight.
Re: Private message to Padfoot
Is she certain her mother's still living? Does she know where she is?
Re: Private message to Padfoot
Miss Perks said that she didn't write before because she's worried her mother wouldn't leave, not because she's happy where she is but because she'd be afraid that Sally-Anne might suffer in reprisal. But one of her friends had the idea that I could somehow help her mother fake her death (presumably since I have experience at that, although she should remember that was the Ministry).
Hang on, though, hasn't Molly met Mrs Perks?
Re: Private message to Padfoot
I have to say I'm finding it a little amusing that you have YET ANOTHER teenaged correspondent. At least this one wants something concrete, eh? Rather than advice.
Re: Private message to Padfoot
But between you and me, I'm not so sure about the precedent saving her mother might set. I mean to say, it's all very well for Sherwood to use each other's connections to help set up escapes and identify people they want to help. But I start to see the method in Beth's decidedly more random selection process. If we start helping every person who's ever been acquainted with Terry, Pansy, Neville, etc., how long will it take for someone to notice? Even with Poppy, Pomona, Minerva and yes, all right, I'll say it, Snivellus up at Hogwarts to help create smokescreens, it starts to worry me a little.
Anyway. Coming to bed soon? I'm staying up here and getting some sleep. It'll be an early start in the morning.
