I did, yeah, after I saw she'd fed you half of that scone. I may have implied that you're out impregnating the lady dogs and she shouldn't feel rejected that her company alone is not enough to keep such a shining example of canine manhood at home all the time.

That's generous of you.

This is getting tiresome, though. I wish we could skip ahead to the part where we tell her the truth.

I don't suppose we're ready to at least have her start minding Bea now and then? Maybe in the afternoons?

She'd probably interpret it as further reward for her loyalty.

I know. Do we trust her yet? Do we trust her that much? To tell her the truth, I mean.

To mind Bea now and then -- mm, probably. I think she's responsible and reliable. Especially as you can keep an eye on her.

I didn't say I trusted her that much. I said that hiding things from her is getting tiresome.

But then, I've recently been told I don't give my trust very easily.

Another owl from Pansy Parkinson?

No, but apparently the next best thing. Her closest friend in the wide world.

I swear I recognise that owl. Smart little thing, too. Knew better than to drop the letter when Ellie was about.

Anyway. It's good to know I'm a source of frustration with teenagers throughout Hogwarts. But the point is that the young lady has a mother she'd like to help get out of the Protectorate.

I rather wish she'd sent this sooner. We might be able to get her mother out on the solstice but it'll be tight.

Sally-Anne Perks?

Is she certain her mother's still living? Does she know where she is?

Oh, she knows where she is. According to her letter, she's essentially a slave in her own home. Her father (whom she warns us not to trust) has kept her mother out of the camps but seems to resent it.

Miss Perks said that she didn't write before because she's worried her mother wouldn't leave, not because she's happy where she is but because she'd be afraid that Sally-Anne might suffer in reprisal. But one of her friends had the idea that I could somehow help her mother fake her death (presumably since I have experience at that, although she should remember that was the Ministry).

Hang on, though, hasn't Molly met Mrs Perks?

I think you're right that she has.

I have to say I'm finding it a little amusing that you have YET ANOTHER teenaged correspondent. At least this one wants something concrete, eh? Rather than advice.

Yeah, I'm really not sure how I became agony aunt to an entire cohort of teens. I'll just blame Reg and leave it at that. Not like he's going to argue the point.

But between you and me, I'm not so sure about the precedent saving her mother might set. I mean to say, it's all very well for Sherwood to use each other's connections to help set up escapes and identify people they want to help. But I start to see the method in Beth's decidedly more random selection process. If we start helping every person who's ever been acquainted with Terry, Pansy, Neville, etc., how long will it take for someone to notice? Even with Poppy, Pomona, Minerva and yes, all right, I'll say it, Snivellus up at Hogwarts to help create smokescreens, it starts to worry me a little.

Anyway. Coming to bed soon? I'm staying up here and getting some sleep. It'll be an early start in the morning.
